Event Overview
On Saturday, December 3, 2022 community orchestra Awesöme Orchestra Collective premiered the nine-movement Requiem Sinfónica, A Requiem Without Words commemorating the 36 lives lost in the tragic Ghost Ship fire of 2016. Local composer and flutist, Arturo Rodriguez, began composing Requiem Sinfónica in early 2017, having been deeply affected by this tragedy in his community. He was searching for an outlet for his grief and what followed became a nine-movement, 90-minute requiem intended to bring the community together to grieve, reflect, celebrate, and honor those lost.
The event took place at the Malonga Casquelord Center for the Arts in Oakland, California. In an effort to make the event as inclusive as possible to everyone so deeply affected by this tragedy, Awesöme Orchestra wanted to make this a hybrid event to attendees either in person or via livestream. However, due to the historic nature of the venue, there was no reliable wifi available.
Producer’s Comments
Thanks to Popup WiFi, Awesöme Orchestra was equipped with reliable wifi to carry high-quality video and audio feeds to its viewers. What’s more, it ended up raining that night which, for a free event, meant that ticket holders were more likely to stay home. Fortunately, Popup WiFi was able to handle the increased number of viewers who decided to watch from home instead of brave the inclement weather.
