Event Overview

The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association’s star-studded Beastly Ball fundraising gala happened at the L.A. Zoo on Saturday, June 3, 2023. Through a combination of ticket sales, donations, sponsorships, corporate partnerships, and silent auction bids, this unique evening of adventure and philanthropy raised more than $1.6 million in support of the Zoo’s wildlife conservation initiatives, education programs, and more.

Actor, comedian, and host Joel McHale emceed the event’s program, leading a rousing “fund-a-need” paddle raise for the Zoo Pals scholarship program, which provides students from under-resourced L.A. schools with access to the Zoo. In tribute to animal lover and GLAZA champion Betty White’s high regard for the scholarship program and her estate’s commitment to match all gifts made through the paddle raise, it was announced that the program would be renamed Betty White’s Zoo Pals.

Producer’s Comments

PopUp WiFi was used in various locations throughout the event route, and was essential to guest check-in, participation in the online silent auction, fund-a-need donations, and sharing to social media, as the internet around the L.A. Zoo’s campus is spotty at best. Much of the Ball’s success—as the second highest-grossing event of its kind in GLAZA’s history—was thanks to PopUp WiFi. It allowed guests to easily and seamlessly bid, donate, and share through their mobile devices, when they otherwise might not have been able to.
