Event Overview
The Unconformity is a non-profit arts organisation that produces an award-winning contemporary arts festival every two years in the industrial mining community of Queenstown; one of lutruwita/Tasmania’s most challenging and provocative locations. Conceived as a grassroots initiative in 2010, the organisation has generated an international profile and influenced positive change within its community.
The Unconformity team worked hard to create a diverse range of events and activities that told the West Coast story and offered something meaningful for both local and visiting audiences.
Queenstown’s old Magistrates Court was transformed into a live TV studio, UNTV Station, which broadcast across mountains, valleys and peaks to the outside world. By integrating PopUp WiFi’s units with local infrastructure, performances, discussions and programming alongside new and resurfaced video content was broadcast from the centre of Queenstown for those who were unable to experience the festival in person.
Other off-site projects included a dance work in an old sawmill, where PopUp WiFi’s units provided the sound team with the ability to soundtrack the work, as well as point-of-sale WiFi for all food and beverage vendors.
Producer’s Comments
PopUp WiFi was central to the livestream of this event, providing fantastic service in collaboration with producers and allowing worldwide audiences to tune in and see all the festival action from their devices. The geographical isolation of Queenstown posed a unique challenge for internet-reliant aspects of the festival. As a satellite event, PopUp WiFi’s units were key in facilitating smooth operations at this unique site.
Our PopUp WiFi experience was great: the technology supported us to overcome technical and communication barriers that often present limitations for ambitious, contemporary experiences in regional and remote places, and we would recommend them to any event organisers working in remote locations.
